Health Care Use

For many sinusitis patients, medication provides temporary or unsatisfactory degree of relief, resulting in multiple doctor visits and even more rounds of medication.

Several studies have compared health care utilization in the year before and the year following treatment to determine if treatment with balloon sinus dilation impacts health care use.

REMODEL - Average Rhinosinusitis Episodes Per Patient

Balloon Dilation: decrease from 5.2 to 1.0; FESS: decrease from 4.5 to 1.0

Average number of acute sinus infections

Treatment Year Prior to Treatment Year Following Treatment Change p-value*
XprESS Multi-Sinus 3.0 0.7 -2.3 <0.0001
RELIEF 5.7 2.1 -3.6 <0.001

*Comparison of mean change from baseline to 1-yr follow-up; p-value from paired t-test.

Average number of sinus-related physician visits

Treatment Year Prior to Treatment Year Following Treatment Change p-value*
XprESS Multi-Sinus 4.1 1.1 -3.0 <0.0001
RELIEF 7.2 2.5 -4.7 <0.0001

*Comparison of mean change from baseline to 1-yr follow-up; p-value from paired t-test.

Average number of antibiotics courses

Treatment Year Prior to Treatment Year Following Treatment Change p-value*
XprESS Multi-Sinus 3.4 1.0 -2.4 <0.0001
RELIEF 5.5 2.3 -3.2 <0.001

*Comparison of mean change from baseline to 1-yr follow-up; p-value from paired t-test.
